The Bihar government has approved the Policy for Safe Reuse of Treated Wastewater, 2026, to enhance water conservation and sustainable urban development. This policy aims to significantly reduce the demand for fresh water by promoting the recycling and safe reuse of treated wastewater.
The framework established by this policy will enable the application of treated wastewater across various sectors. These include industrial operations, construction, irrigation for public spaces, street cleaning, firefighting, and agricultural practices. This initiative is also expected to aid in preserving natural water bodies like ponds and wetlands.
Minister Nitish Mishra stated that the initial phase will concentrate on building treatment infrastructure and distribution networks. Robust monitoring systems and an institutional mechanism will be established to guarantee the policy's successful execution, fostering Bihar's leadership in water management.
