Bihar Polluters Face Closure Over Toxic Discharge
18 Sep
Summary
- Two industrial units in Darbhanga and Patna face closure orders.
- Effluent treatment plants found non-operational, discharging untreated waste.
- Violations include bypassing ETPs and pumping waste into borewells.
In Bihar, two industrial facilities are on the verge of closure following rigorous inspections by the Bihar State Pollution Control Board (BSPCB) and IIT Kharagpur. In Darbhanga, the Mithila Milk Producers Cooperative Union Ltd. was found to have a malfunctioning effluent treatment plant (ETP).
Inspectors discovered that untreated effluent was being bypassed and pumped into a borewell, a critical violation of environmental laws. Similarly, in Patna's Pataliputra Industrial Area, Harilal Ventures Pvt Ltd. had an inoperative ETP, leading to the discharge of untreated waste into a nearby drain.
The BSPCB is now taking definitive action to shut down both units under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, to mitigate adverse environmental impacts and ensure compliance with pollution control norms.
