Summary

- Jackie was a beloved fixture known via a 24/7 livestream.

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has been identified as the primary cause of death for the beloved Big Bear bald eagle, Jackie. The necropsy revealed that an uncommon presentation of the virus caused a severe stomach ulcer, leading to persistent internal bleeding, anemia, and bacterial sepsis.
Jackie, estimated to be around 12 years old, was found in July and received care at the Ojai Raptor Center. Despite veterinary efforts, including a blood transfusion, her condition worsened. Additional testing showed inflammation in her heart and blood vessels, with HPAI genetic material present in multiple tissues.
While a rodenticide was detected, it was not deemed the primary cause. Jackie's remains were cremated to prevent disease transmission. Her life, documented by a 24/7 livestream, connected millions to bald eagles and highlighted the importance of wildlife conservation.
Jackie's legacy is honored through memorials and a state resolution proclaiming September 4 as California Wildlife Day. Officials confirmed her partner, Shadow, and their eaglets show no signs of illness.
