Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is pioneering a new initiative to install decentralized wastewater treatment and recycling systems in 30 public toilets across the city. This project, with a combined capacity of 150 KLD, will treat blackwater to enable reuse for toilet flushing, floor cleaning, and other non-potable functions. The compact, automated units are designed for efficient operation with odor control and low maintenance.
The selected agency will manage the entire process, from design to maintenance, employing biofiltration, sludge clarification, and ozone-based disinfection. Treated water quality will meet strict standards for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and total suspended solids. City officials hope this first-of-its-kind project will conserve freshwater and improve sanitation, with plans to replicate it city-wide if successful.
Environmental experts advocate for such wastewater recycling as a crucial step for water conservation in growing cities. This initiative is seen as a proactive measure to prepare for potential future water challenges, ensuring sustainable resource management for generations to come.
