The Bezos Earth Fund has committed $100 million to a new global initiative aimed at preventing species extinction. This contribution supports the Species Recovery Alliance, a coalition of conservation organizations dedicated to accelerating efforts to save endangered, critically endangered, and extinct-in-the-wild species.
The alliance will direct grants independently while coordinating efforts, focusing on measures like habitat restoration and captive breeding programs. This initiative addresses the urgent reality that over 49,500 species are currently listed as threatened by the IUCN, with the alliance prioritizing the highest-risk categories.
Cristián Samper, managing director of the Bezos Earth Fund, highlighted that the primary challenge for conservation is often not scientific knowledge but consistent financial support. The alliance seeks to provide this reliable, long-term funding to ensure species recovery projects can succeed.
This effort builds upon the Phoenix Species Project, a prior $200 million initiative by the Earth Fund and Re:wild. The Bezos Earth Fund, part of Jeff Bezos's larger $10 billion climate and nature pledge, has already granted $2.4 billion, with over $7 billion remaining for distribution by 2030.
