The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has mandated that the state submit a report regarding Berijam Lake's ecological suitability to be recommended as a Tiger Reserve. This directive comes in response to a public interest litigation filed by advocate R. Manibharathi.
The petitioner is also seeking the enforcement of permanent restrictions on commercial tourism and vehicular traffic around Berijam Lake. He highlighted that the lake, a freshwater reservoir within the Kodaikanal Wildlife Sanctuary, is an ecologically sensitive and biodiversity-rich zone.
