Bengaluru Well Revived: A Century-Old History Flows Again

A historic well in Cox Town, Bengaluru, once neglected and filled with silt, has been restored to provide clean water once more. This century-old structure, believed to originate from the 1920s during British administration, was revitalized through a collaborative effort involving approximately 50-60 residents and community organizations. The initiative was led by local resident Surendra Ravi, who shared that the well was initially constructed to supply drinking water to workers from Andhra Pradesh brought to Bengaluru for sanitation projects. Many descendants of these workers still reside in the area. Restoration efforts, undertaken over one-and-a-half months, included desilting, cleaning, and beautifying the site, with traditional well diggers playing a key role. The well, measuring 45ft deep with a 9ft diameter, now has significantly improved water quality and can hold up to 81kl. This project transforms a forgotten relic into a symbol of community conservation and sustainable water management.
