Summary
- A retired engineer transformed his 600 sq. ft. terrace into a vibrant mini rainforest.
- The lush garden hosts over 100 plant types, attracting numerous birds and insects.
- The rooftop forest significantly reduces local temperatures and improves air quality.
Amidst rapid urbanization and deforestation, a retired mechanical engineer in Bengaluru, Venkataraman, has cultivated a unique 600 sq. ft. rooftop rainforest. This transformed terrace now mimics the Western Ghats' ecosystem, hosting over 100 plant varieties and attracting numerous birds, butterflies, and bees.
The vibrant garden features fruit-bearing trees like cherries and avocados, alongside essential plants like curry leaves. It has become a haven for at least 17 bird species, stingless bees, and butterflies, fostering biodiversity in a dense metropolitan area.
Venkataraman's initiative, which started with a few potted plants, has grown into a multi-level green sanctuary. The rooftop is equipped with a sophisticated water distribution and recycling system, protecting the garden even during severe weather.
This innovative project yields tangible environmental benefits, reducing surrounding temperatures by 3-4 degrees Celsius during summer and improving air quality by approximately 10%. Venkataraman's efforts highlight the substantial positive impact individuals can achieve in urban conservation.
