Bengaluru Lake Suffocates: Thousands of Fish Dead
5 Oct
Summary
- Thousands of fish died in Doddagubbi Lake due to oxygen depletion.
- Polluted water from a dumping yard entered the lake during rains.
- Officials suspect asphyxiation as the primary cause of death.
Doddagubbi Lake in Bengaluru has experienced a significant fish kill, with thousands of aquatic lives lost. The 125-acre lake, located in the Mahadevapura Assembly constituency, saw dead fish floating across its surface and edges. Fisheries officials and the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) are investigating the incident. Preliminary findings suggest the fish died from asphyxiation due to a severe lack of dissolved oxygen. This oxygen depletion is believed to be a consequence of polluted rainwater runoff from the Mittaganahalli GBA dumping yard entering the lake during recent rainfall. Water samples have been collected by both the Fisheries Department and KSPCB for laboratory analysis to ascertain the exact nature and extent of the contamination. Environmental activists have also raised concerns about potential sewage entering the water body, which could further degrade water quality and reduce oxygen levels. Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda has ordered an inspection and corrective actions. A final determination of the cause awaits the KSPCB's laboratory test results.
