21 Feb
Summary
- Villagers near Bellahalli landfill blocked over 150 garbage trucks.
- Protesters cited damaged roads and health risks from waste dumping.
- The crisis affected waste collection and disposal for two days.

Bengaluru is currently facing a significant garbage crisis following a protest by villagers near the Bellahalli landfill. On February 16, more than 150 garbage trucks were blocked from accessing the facility, disrupting waste collection and disposal operations for two days.
Residents cited damaged internal roads and serious health concerns stemming from the constant movement of waste-laden lorries. They also expressed dissatisfaction with the delayed release of promised funds for local infrastructure development. Some trucks reportedly attempted to divert to Doddaballapur but were also turned back by local residents.
Officials from Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited stated that the issue has been resolved, with orders issued for development works around landfill sites and waste processing plants to address residents' grievances. Poor waste management can lead to the spread of infectious diseases, respiratory problems, and water contamination.
The disruption highlights the critical importance of urban waste management. Uncollected garbage creates unsanitary conditions, breeding illness and posing risks through germ and toxin spread. Open burning of trash contributes to air pollution, exacerbating respiratory issues, while leachate from waste can contaminate drinking water sources.
