Bengaluru's Air Quality Alert: Minister Threatens 'Gas Chamber' Warning
27 Feb
Summary
- Bengaluru's Environment Minister warned of a 'gas chamber' if air quality exceeds 100 AQI.
- Road dust and windblown dust are significant contributors to Bengaluru's air pollution.
- Notices will be issued to authorities if daily AQI in Bengaluru surpasses 100.

Bengaluru's Environment Minister, Eshwar Khandre, has directed the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) to issue notices to local authorities if the city's daily air quality index (AQI) surpasses 100. The minister expressed serious concern, warning that the city could become "another gas chamber like Delhi." Air quality is monitored across Bengaluru, with officials noting that while air quality has seen some improvement, certain areas frequently experience AQI above 100.
Officials highlighted that dust, both from roads and windblown sources, accounts for a substantial portion of Bengaluru's air pollutants, with vehicular emissions showing a reduction due to stricter regulations. The minister has ordered the deployment of mechanized sweepers to mitigate road dust. Furthermore, he is convening a meeting with city legislators to discuss comprehensive measures for air, water, and noise pollution, and has requested a report on wastewater treatment.
The minister acknowledged the impact of global warming and climate change on the city's rising temperatures. Proposed strategies include increasing green cover, enforcing stricter dust control norms, and strengthening regulatory enforcement. Activists also called for regulating high-intensity LED boards contributing to light pollution, urging government action.
