A specialized five-member team from the Sundarbans Tiger Reserve has been dispatched to Bihar to assist in a critical tiger reintroduction initiative. This team, which successfully tranquillized the Odisha tigress Zeenat in December 2025, is now tasked with capturing a tigress at the Valmiki Tiger Reserve. The captured animal is destined for the Buxa Tiger Reserve in North Bengal, a significant step in the country's 13th tiger reintroduction program.
The team includes deputy rangers Mrityunjay Biswas and Rajib Naskar, forest guard Partha Haldar, Aranyashathi Kalipada Gayen, and veterinarian Sankar Biswas. Their expertise, particularly in using nylon nets for containment during tranquilization, proved effective during the Zeenat operation and could be invaluable in Bihar. The final strategy for the capture will be determined upon the team's arrival and in collaboration with Wildlife Institute of India experts and Buxa officials.
Wildlife Institute of India experts have reportedly identified potential tigresses at Valmiki Tiger Reserve. The selection process will involve joint assessment by the arriving Bengal team and WII specialists. A three-member team from the National Tiger Conservation Authority is overseeing the entire exercise and is expected to visit Buxa by the end of the current week.
