On October 6th, 2025, the Lakeland Wildlife Oasis in Cumbria, Britain, announced the passing of Pav, the oldest living snow leopard in captivity in the country. Pav, who was 19 years old, was "peacefully put to sleep" after suffering from progressive age-related illnesses.
Pav, known affectionately as "Pav," had a remarkable legacy. He raised three cubs with his partner Tara, who passed away in February of this year. Pav's offspring went on to have eight grand cubs and three great-grand cubs, ensuring his lasting impact on the snow leopard breeding program.
In addition to his role as a prolific breeder, Pav also had a brief stint in the spotlight. He appeared in the 2007 film "The Golden Compass" alongside his brother before arriving at the Lakeland Wildlife Oasis in 2011. According to the zoo's director, Jo Marsden, Pav was "their favorite animal" and a "confident and competent" performer.
Pav's passing is a significant loss for the zoo and the conservation efforts for the snow leopard species. The Lakeland Wildlife Oasis has announced that Pav's enclosure will temporarily be turned into a Lynx enclosure, as they welcome new animals on loan from Edinburgh Zoo. However, the zoo is hopeful that they will be able to welcome more snow leopards next year, continuing Pav's legacy.
