The Kittur Rani Channamma Mini Zoo, located at Bhutaramanahatti, is poised for significant growth, with proposals to welcome species like zebras, giraffes, and exotic birds in the upcoming months. The zoo currently houses approximately 190 animals and is seeking approval from the Central Zoo Authority to expand its premises and reclassify as a medium-category zoo.
Visitors can anticipate seeing zebras and giraffes in Belagavi, joining Mysuru and Bengaluru as the few places in Karnataka offering such attractions. The planned reptile additions include king cobras, Indian cobras, rock pythons, reticulated pythons, and green anacondas, alongside gharials and mugger crocodiles. A dedicated crocodile arena will educate the public on their ecological importance.
New avian species such as sun conures, budgerigars, zebra finches, and rose-ringed parakeets are also slated for addition. To enrich the visitor experience, a wildlife museum and auditorium have been completed at an investment of Rs 7.2 crore, featuring interactive displays on biodiversity and conservation. These developments are awaiting approval from the Central Zoo Authority and will likely be discussed at an upcoming State Zoo Authority meeting.
