New Bins Arrive for Weekly Food Waste Collection
16 Jan
Summary
- Weekly food waste collections begin March 30th.
- Waste to be converted into renewable energy and fertilizer.
- Pest-proof bins feature locking lids to deter wildlife.

Grey bins are being delivered across Bedfordshire in preparation for the launch of weekly food waste collections on Monday, March 30th. Residents are instructed to place all food leftovers, including out-of-date items, tea bags, and pet food, into the new bins instead of their usual black bags.
This collected food waste will undergo processing to be converted into valuable renewable energy and fertilizer. To facilitate this new service, households will receive a small kitchen caddy for daily use and a larger outdoor bin. These bins are equipped with a secure locking mechanism on the handle to prevent pests like rats and foxes from accessing the contents and to minimize odors and flies.
Council officials emphasized that this initiative is a significant step toward reducing the area's carbon footprint and increasing recycling rates. By participating, residents contribute to generating green energy and supporting local agriculture, while also helping to keep general waste bins cleaner and lighter. Residents who have not yet received their bins or require replacements can contact the council via its website.
