Beavers Astonish England: Ecosystem Transformed in One Year
5 Apr
Summary
- Four beavers, absent for 400 years, have dramatically changed the local ecosystem.
- The beavers built a 35-meter dam, enhancing habitats for diverse wildlife species.
- A protected barn owl and otters have been observed interacting with the beaver environment.

A year ago, England welcomed back Eurasian beavers, absent for four centuries, in a landmark reintroduction project. Four beavers, relocated from Scotland, were released into a freshwater lake in Dorset.
These beavers have since constructed an impressive 35-meter dam. This structure has profoundly enhanced local habitats. Consequently, a diverse array of wildlife, including plants, insects, amphibians, birds, and bats, are now thriving.
Remarkably, trail camera footage has documented fascinating interactions, such as beavers playing with an otter. The presence of a protected barn owl in the vicinity further underscores the positive ecological impact.
The National Trust plans to release between 10 and 25 adult beavers in subsequent phases. The next release is anticipated this autumn, continuing the effort to re-establish this vital species.
