Summary
- A black bear attacked its handler at Hangzhou Safari Park.
- The attack occurred due to the smell of fruit and carrot treats.
- Staff used a basketball hoop to fight off the agitated bear.
Chaos erupted at Hangzhou Safari Park when a performing black bear attacked its handler. The incident occurred on Saturday as the bear was being led onto the stage, reportedly driven wild by the scent of carrots and apples the handler was carrying. Visitors watched in horror as the bear pinned the man, with other staff rushing in to intervene.
Zoo employees used various items, including a basketball hoop, a chair, and a bamboo stick, to ward off the agitated animal. The attack lasted approximately 40 seconds, after which the bear briefly released the handler before attempting to grab his legs again. Another black bear was seen being dragged away by staff during the commotion.
The park stated both the bear and the handler escaped unharmed. The incident has sparked renewed debate about the use of performing animals, leading the zoo to cancel its black bear show. They apologized for the negative experience, pledged to monitor the bear's well-being, and committed to improving emergency response protocols.
