Summary
- B.C. Place stadium is reducing waste with reusable cups.
- Stadium aims for 90% waste diversion by next year.
- Hotels save thousands by cutting food and bottle waste.
B.C. Place is taking a significant lead in sustainability within the hospitality sector by introducing reusable food and beverage containers. This initiative, which includes ShareWares cups, was successfully implemented during a recent Vancouver Whitecaps game, serving 54,000 fans.
The stadium, preparing to host seven FIFA World Cup matches next year, aims to dramatically cut down on the substantial waste generated from events. Currently, the venue diverts 80-77% of waste, with a goal of reaching 90% diversion by the end of next year.
Smaller hospitality providers are also embracing waste reduction. Hotels have reported significant annual savings, up to $64,000, through measures like food waste audits and eliminating single-use plastic bottles, demonstrating that sustainable practices can benefit both the environment and business bottom lines.
