Barcelona's Heat Crisis: Vulnerable Neighbors Suffer Most

Barcelona is grappling with extreme heat, having broken its record on July 8 with temperatures hitting 40.7C. The wider province has already recorded over 205 heat-related deaths this month. Projections indicate Barcelona could see over 246,000 heat-attributable deaths between 2015 and 2099, largely due to its urban density and Mediterranean location.

The El Raval neighborhood stands out as particularly vulnerable. This densely populated area has one of the city's lowest median incomes and scarce green spaces. Many homes lack adequate insulation and ventilation, trapping heat and exacerbating the suffocating conditions.

Migrant communities, comprising 67 percent of El Raval's residents, are disproportionately affected. Many seek refuge in air-conditioned shopping centers or the beach, or utilize limited 'climate shelters' like municipal centers. However, these shelters often have restricted hours and accessibility issues, particularly at night.

A self-managed community green space, Agora Juan Andres Benitez, created by residents, offers a vital refuge. This space provides cooling greenery, social cohesion, and essential services. Despite its importance, a court has ordered its eviction on October 8, threatening a critical haven for the neighborhood's most marginalized residents.
