Dual Storm Fury: Bangkok Floods, Pacific Hurricanes Threaten
28 Sep
Summary
- Bangkok declared disaster zone due to waist-high flooding from heavy rains.
- Hurricane Nolo threatened Hawaii's Big Island with heavy rain and strong winds.
- Hurricane Polo predicted to hit Baja California as a category 2 storm.
Bangkok was declared a disaster zone last week as waist-high floodwaters engulfed its streets. Continuous heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, caused by a low-pressure system over central Thailand, led to severe flooding. One station recorded 213.5mm of rain in 24 hours before the system shifted on Sunday, ending the downpours.
In the Pacific, Hawaii's Big Island faced Hurricane Nolo over the weekend. By Saturday morning, Nolo was a category 2 hurricane, bringing significant rainfall and raising concerns about flooding and mudslides. Over 530mm of rain was recorded on the island since Tuesday, September 22. Nolo is forecast to move west and intensify.
Meanwhile, Hurricane Polo is expected to make landfall on the Baja California peninsula on Monday, September 28. Once a category 5 storm, it is predicted to be a category 2 at landfall. Coastal regions are under a hurricane warning due to storm surge risks, with intense rainfall expected to cause life-threatening flooding and mudslides.
