Drought Hits Bandipur: Water Scarcity Threatens Wildlife
23 Oct
Summary
- Deficient rainfall has dried up most water bodies in Bandipur Tiger Reserve.
- Wildlife is seeking refuge in Kabini and Nugu backwaters due to scarcity.
- Migratory birds have not arrived in Bandipur this year due to changing weather.
Bandipur Tiger Reserve is experiencing a critical water shortage following deficient rainfall. The reserve, which usually receives between 900 mm and 1,200 mm of rain annually, now has most of its 420 lakes nearly dry. This scarcity is forcing wildlife to migrate to the Kabini and Nugu backwaters in search of water.
Adding to the crisis, rising temperatures have further depleted existing water sources. The dry spell has also led to a concerning absence of migratory birds, typically present from July to October. Forest officials are implementing measures, including the use of 56 solar-powered borewell pumps, to replenish water holes and support the wildlife. Recent moderate rains have offered some temporary relief, and the department is closely monitoring the situation.
