Haryana Rights Panel Demands Bandhwari Landfill Pollution Report
15 Oct
Summary
- Human Rights Commission seeks urgent report on Bandhwari landfill issues.
- Environmentalist complaint cited groundwater pollution and health hazards.
- Commission previously ordered measures to prevent leachate seepage.
The Haryana Human Rights Commission (HHRC) has issued a reminder for a report concerning the Bandhwari landfill, with a hearing scheduled for February 2, 2027. An environmentalist's complaint in 2023 highlighted groundwater pollution and health hazards stemming from inadequate waste management at the site.
The HHRC had previously intervened in May 2023, visiting the landfill and directing the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) to implement drainage systems to prevent leachate contamination. Further orders mandated lining leachate ponds and expediting drainage work.
Despite these measures, concerns over leakage persisted later in 2023, with allegations of leachate flowing towards Bandhwari village. This prompted the MCG to issue a notice to its concessionaire and the forest department to deploy teams.
