Jackie the Eagle's Anemia Worsens, Vets Seek Answers

The health of bald eagle Jackie has significantly declined, with her anemia worsening despite earlier hopes. As of August 3rd, veterinarians reported Jackie's packed cell volume (PCV) dropped to 13 percent, signaling a more severe state of anemia. Specialists are currently conducting advanced diagnostic tests to better understand her condition and determine the next steps in her treatment.

Jackie, an estimated 14-year-old eagle, was attacked in mid-July near Dana Point Park by two subadult bald eagles. Following the attack, she was discovered unable to fly and was transported to the Ojai Raptor Center for intensive care. Initial assessments revealed severe anemia and kidney inflammation, prompting immediate supportive treatment.

Earlier treatments included a life-saving blood transfusion on July 20th and oxygen therapy. While rodenticide toxicity was suspected, caregivers do not believe it is the primary cause. Extensive testing has already ruled out lead poisoning, cancer, and ingested foreign objects, leaving veterinarians to pursue further diagnostics.
