Her critical condition stemmed from an apparent altercation with two subadult eagles on July 17, 2026. While she defended herself, she was found grounded near Dana Point Park and subsequently transported to the Ojai Raptor Center. Initial assessments revealed severe anemia and inflammation affecting her kidneys.
Over the following weeks, veterinarians provided rigorous testing and supportive treatment. Despite a brief improvement in her packed cell volume, her anemia worsened. The eagle also received a life-saving blood transfusion and underwent oxygen therapy, though rodenticide toxicity was not believed to be the primary cause.
Jackie was hatched in 2012 and became a local celebrity through the webcam managed by Friends of Big Bear Valley. Her partner, Shadow, and their eaglets, Sandy and Luna, continue to be monitored, although fans worry about Shadow's association with a new female eagle.
