Aussies Brace for Weekend Weather Mayhem
16 Jan
Summary
- Torrential downpours and destructive winds lash eastern Australia.
- Sydney forecasts 100mm of rain, the wettest summer weekend.
- Victoria's Great Ocean Road closed due to record flash floods.

Eastern Australia is set to experience a weekend of extreme weather as a low-pressure system brings torrential downpours, destructive winds, and flash flooding. Southern New South Wales and Sydney are predicted to receive up to 100mm of rain, marking potentially the wettest summer weekend of the year. Authorities have issued severe warnings for heavy rainfall and damaging winds in several NSW districts, urging tourists to reconsider travel plans.
In Victoria, record-breaking flash floods have already caused significant damage, washing away vehicles and inundating campgrounds along the popular Great Ocean Road. The Wye, Kennett, and Cumberland rivers swelled rapidly, forcing the closure of the Great Ocean Road between Lorne and Skenes Creek. Emergency services are advising campers near waterways to leave ahead of the predicted continued heavy rain.
Further weather alerts are in place across the country, with parts of Queensland on flood watch and a potential severe tropical cyclone forming off its coast. Darwin is also anticipating heavy rainfall. In contrast, cities like Adelaide and Perth are expected to have drier, warmer conditions.
