Australia's Grid Runs on Sunshine: Renewables Hit Record High

On a recent clear Saturday, Australia's National Electricity Market experienced a landmark achievement as renewable energy sources met 80.4% of the demand. This record-breaking surge saw rooftop solar panels supply over half of the power to the eastern states, South Australia, and the Australian Capital Territory for a brief period around lunchtime.

This significant milestone highlights the growing contribution of clean energy to the nation's power supply. The energy minister commented on the increase in clean, affordable, and sovereign energy sources. Researchers noted that sunny days combined with low demand for heating and cooling created ideal conditions, contributing to this record season for renewables. It was also observed that coal generation in Queensland hit a record low over the same weekend.

While this event marks progress towards a renewable energy system, experts emphasize that sustained annual contributions and reduced coal consumption are crucial for emissions reduction. Analysis indicates that current investments may be insufficient to meet Australia's 2030 renewable energy target of 82%. Excess renewable energy generated was managed through storage in pumped hydro and batteries, with some being curtailed due to system constraints and low prices.
