El Nino Fuels Australia's Fire Risk

Australia is bracing for a significant bushfire season, with fire authorities issuing warnings of elevated risk across almost all states and territories. This heightened danger is largely attributed to an El Nino event, declared in June, which is expected to bring reduced rainfall to eastern Australia and higher temperatures to the south. The seasonal outlook highlights dry conditions in the east and substantial fuel loads in central and northern regions as primary concerns.

Specific areas of concern include the Northern Territory, parts of New South Wales that previously burned during the black summer fires, and various regions in Victoria, Tasmania, Queensland, Western Australia, and South Australia. These areas face risks from dry vegetation and heavy fuel loads, exacerbated by an unseasonably warm winter and below-average rainfall in some parts of New South Wales. Experts warn that a combination of El Nino and climate change-driven heatwaves could create extreme fire conditions.
