Students Launch Bird Nest Mission in Assam
15 Feb
Summary
- Student group promotes urban bird nest conservation.
- Initiative expanded to 16 schools in Golaghat district.
- Terracotta platforms and saplings aid nesting.

An innovative initiative by students in eastern Assam's Golaghat district is taking flight to conserve bird nests in urban environments. The student-led group, "Chorai Bandhob" from Bongaon Chola High School, began by distributing terracotta nesting platforms.
This effort, inspired by England's Nest Box Week, has grown significantly. By February 14, 2026, the initiative involved students from 16 schools in Golaghat and attracted participants from 40 schools in Majuli district. The program aims to address the decline of specialist bird species due to urbanization.
Under the motto "space for nests, future for birds," the students are promoting long-term conservation by planting local fruit-yielding trees that offer natural nesting sites. This approach encourages safe breeding environments for birds, particularly vital for species found in human-dominated landscapes.
The initiative, celebrated on February 14, 2026, featured educational events like dance dramas and seminars. Mid-February was chosen as an ideal time for awareness campaigns preceding India's typical bird breeding season, which starts in March.
