Three two-year-old Asiatic lions have recently arrived at Wingham Wildlife Park in Canterbury, Kent. Named Theo, Rakesh, and Thor, these brothers were transferred from Fota Wildlife Park in Ireland at the beginning of May and are described as settling in well by the park's curator.
Staff are focusing on making the transition smooth for the lions, who are experiencing their first time away from their original home. The wildlife park is the only location in Kent to house Asiatic lions, a species with a critically low population of 500 to 600 individuals remaining in the wild, found only in India's Gir Forest.
Future plans for Wingham Wildlife Park include expanding enclosures for the lions and black rhinos, featuring a glass tunnel walkway for the lions. Additionally, two of the brothers are slated to join a breeding program overseen by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria to help bolster the species' numbers.
