Large parts of Asia were impacted by severe weather events last week, including devastating floods and landslides. In Vietnam, torrential rain caused extensive damage, with one station recording 206mm of rainfall in 24 hours, leading to homes being destroyed and nearly 600 acres of farmland ruined. Flash floods in southern Vietnam resulted in at least four fatalities and left four people missing. South Korea also faced significant rainfall, with nearly 200mm recorded in Paju, causing widespread flooding of homes and roads.
Concurrently, Europe is enduring a prolonged heatwave. Southern Italy was under a red weather warning as temperatures were projected to exceed 40C. This heat is expected to move across Spain, with forecasts suggesting temperatures could surpass 45C in some areas.
In the eastern Pacific, Tropical Storm Elida formed with peak winds of 70mph. It is expected to move north and weaken without making landfall. Another tropical storm, Fausto, also developed and is predicted to intensify into a category 2 hurricane. The western Atlantic has seen a quiet season, though a tropical depression in the Gulf of Mexico is anticipated to become Tropical Storm Bertha, posing a flooding risk to the southeastern United States.
