Moles Unearth Asbestos: Playing Field May Cost £600k
17 Jun
Summary
- A playing field is closed for nearly a year due to mole-disturbed asbestos.
- Potential costs to make the site safe could reach up to £600,000.
- Asbestos was found in 23 out of 30 sampled locations at the site.
The Valley Playing Field in Chalford, Gloucestershire, remains closed for nearly a year due to asbestos contamination. Mole activity recently disturbed asbestos-cement materials, buried when the site was levelled in the 1940s, bringing fragments to the surface. This poses a potential risk of airborne asbestos fibres.
Remediation costs are estimated to be substantial, potentially reaching up to £600,000, a significant sum for the parish council. Andrew Morris-Wyatt of Chalford Parish Council noted that further tests are being conducted to fully assess the risks. Initial findings from 30 sampled locations revealed asbestos in 23 areas.
Stroud District Council is responsible for determining if the site should be officially classified as contaminated land. They have committed to providing updates and holding a public meeting as soon as further information becomes available. Residents are thanked for their patience during the ongoing investigation.
