25 Oct
Summary
- Around 40 individuals protesting waste dumping in Aravallis were detained.
- Protestors claim illegal dumping continues despite NGT prohibition.
- Authorities state the site is not part of Aravallis and is used temporarily.
Faridabad police detained about 40 people on Saturday protesting the Municipal Corporation of Faridabad's (MCF) alleged dumping of municipal solid waste near the Aravalli foothills. The protestors, who had been demonstrating for 10 days, claimed their tents were vandalized and the area cordoned off to facilitate waste disposal. They allege this action violates National Green Tribunal (NGT) orders prohibiting dumping in Aravalli forest regions.
Authorities stated that the site is not within the Aravallis but belongs to Haryana Power Generation Corporation Limited (HPGCL) and is being used temporarily. Police also claimed protestors resorted to stone pelting when officers attempted to intervene. This incident marks the second time protestors have been detained and their camps removed to allow waste trucks access. Dumping waste in the Aravalli hills contravenes multiple environmental regulations and court orders.
