Apartments Turn Waste Into Gold
29 Jan
Summary
- Apartment complexes are adopting OWC machines for daily wet waste processing.
- Compost sales generate modest revenue, covering some operational costs.
- Composting initiatives lead to waste collection tax discounts for residents.

Apartment complexes in the city are increasingly adopting sustainable waste management solutions, focusing on converting household wet waste into organic compost. Modern Organic Waste Composter (OWC) machines are being installed, capable of processing wet waste into nutrient-rich compost within a single day. This innovation aims to significantly reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills.
These composting initiatives offer dual benefits: environmental sustainability and economic advantage. The compost produced is sold to residents and others, creating a modest revenue stream that helps offset operational costs. For example, the Canopy apartment complex processes about 180kg of wet waste daily, producing 60kg of manure sold at Rs 3 per kg. Furthermore, residents are experiencing tangible financial benefits, with some complexes seeing a 50% discount on their waste collection tax due to these efforts.
While OWC machines represent a swift composting method, traditional vermicomposting remains in use at some residential complexes. Planet SKS has successfully utilized OWC technology for four years, managing 70-80kg of wet waste daily. These sustainable practices are not only helping manage waste effectively but also improving living conditions by reducing odor and pest issues.
