Antarctica Tourism: Wonder or Waste?
14 Mar
Summary
- Tourism impacts Antarctica with pollution and soil compaction.
- Black carbon from tourism causes additional snowmelt each summer.
- Antarctic snow remains cleaner than Himalayan snow despite pollution.

Initial public reactions to visiting Antarctica can be negative, with concerns about the environmental impact of tourism. While the pristine Antarctic landscape is a draw, the reality of tourism's effects warrants a closer look.
Concerns include pollution from diesel engines and waste entering waterways, as well as soil compaction from foot traffic. There's also an increased risk of spreading avian flu among wildlife populations.
A 2022 study published in Nature indicated that black carbon pollution originating from tourism is darkening Antarctica's snow. This darkening is estimated to cause an additional 23mm of snowmelt each summer. However, researchers emphasize that Antarctic snow remains the cleanest globally, containing 1000 times less black carbon compared to the Himalayas.
