Controlled burns at Angel Island State Park recommenced on Wednesday afternoon, leading to diminished air quality for residents in areas east of the island. Communities such as Oakland, Alameda, Berkeley, and Richmond experienced the effects of the smoke.
The California State Parks, in collaboration with Cal Fire and the Marin County Fire Department, are managing these burns. Although initially started on September 8, the operation was briefly paused and resumed on Wednesday. It is slated to continue until Saturday.
A total of 260 acres are designated for burning, with 62 acres completed so far. California State Parks states the prescribed burns are a measure to mitigate wildfire risk by significantly reducing grassland. The California Fire Department has alerted that smoke will be observable across the San Francisco Bay region daily between 9 am and 6 pm PDT until Saturday.
