Summary
- Revitalized Amarillo Zoo hosts successful first Zoo Parade.
- New non-profit sanctuary features 70 exotic species.
- Deal signed in April 2026 revitalized the zoo.

The Amarillo Zoo & Sanctuary experienced a monumental success with its inaugural Zoo Parade held on Saturday, July 4th. An overwhelming number of visitors, undeterred by the heat, filled the streets and parking areas, showcasing immense community enthusiasm for the revitalized facility.
This resurgence follows a period of disrepair for the zoo, originally established as Children's Storyland Zoo in 1955. A pivotal agreement signed in April 2026 between the City of Amarillo and Stephanie Brady, Executive Director of Wild West Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, transitioned the zoo into a non-profit sanctuary. This new model aims to house 70 species from worldwide locations.
Significant efforts, including repairs, repainting, and improved animal enclosures, were undertaken by city workers, volunteers, and zoo staff. This collaborative hard work has paid off, as evidenced by the public's overwhelming positive response and support for the sanctuary's new direction. Children enjoyed candy handouts and photo opportunities during the parade.
