The short cherry blossom season at Alnwick Garden has commenced, offering a spectacular display of 329 Taihaku cherry trees. This year's bloom faced a tense moment as Storm Dave threatened the budding flowers last weekend. Fortunately, the delicate petals remained intact as they were still developing when the storm passed.
Gardeners have worked throughout the year to ensure the health of these trees, which are expected to be in full bloom for the next two to three weeks. The orchard's design deliberately features a single species to create a powerful visual impact.
To celebrate the blossoms, Alnwick Garden has incorporated elements inspired by the Japanese tradition of Hanami, including windchimes, lanterns, and haiku poems. The orchard floor is also adorned with daffodils, creating a beautiful contrast with the cherry blossoms.
The Alnwick Garden, established in 2001, is also providing a live "blossom watch" feed. This collection represents the world's largest of this particular cherry blossom species.
