3 Apr
Summary
- Security camera footage captured an alligator at a Florida home's doorstep.
- South Florida is the only place in the world where both alligators and crocodiles coexist.
- The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has documented 500 alligator bites since 1948.

A woman in Land O'Lakes, Florida, captured startling footage of an alligator on her doorstep. The five-minute video from her security camera shows the large reptile, identifiable by its broad snout and dark coloring, near the residence.
South Florida is globally unique as the only location where both alligators and crocodiles inhabit the same environment. Distinguishing them, alligators typically have U-shaped snouts and are black, while crocodiles possess more V-shaped snouts and are grayish-brown.
Data from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reveals a significant number of alligator-related incidents, with 500 bites recorded since 1948. Of these, 346 were major, and 32 led to fatalities.
Authorities advise maintaining distance from alligators, never feeding them, and running away if charged. Vigilance is especially crucial during breeding seasons in April and May-June when males are more aggressive.
