Crocodiles of the World in Brize Norton, Oxfordshire, has bid a fond farewell to Albert, one of its most cherished American alligators. Albert joined the zoo in March 2013 as an adult and quickly became a familiar and beloved resident.
He was renowned for his gentle demeanor, particularly his nurturing interactions with his young. Albert fathered numerous hatchlings, showcasing the caring nature of adult male American alligators. His impressive presence, exceeding 3 meters in length, earned him the affectionate title of 'gentle giant' among the zoo staff and visitors.
Albert's significance extended beyond the zoo enclosures, as he participated in television programs and crocodilian research. His long-time companion, Daisy, also a resident and featured in a Channel 5 documentary, shared many years with him. Recently, Albert had not been himself, prompting a veterinary visit. After careful consideration of his health, the zoo staff made the heart-wrenching decision to euthanize him on Saturday.
