Trump-Linked Project Devastates Albanian Wetlands, Say Experts
29 Jul
Summary
- Preparatory work for a Trump-linked hotel has severely damaged turtle nesting sites.
- Deforestation and construction have disrupted bird habitats and vital wetland flows.
- Environmentalists condemn the $5.1 billion project as an 'absolute biodiversity massacre'.

Preliminary construction for a large hotel project linked to the Trump family has resulted in irreversible damage to Albania's coast, according to environmental experts. During May, preparatory work included clearing a road, deforestation, and building a bridge, which has already impacted loggerhead turtle nesting sites. Marine biologist Olsi Nika of EcoAlbania stated that the work has disturbed nesting grounds for numerous bird species and disrupted water flows essential for wetlands. Professor Ferdinand Bego of the University of Tirana described the damage as largely irreparable, occurring long before official construction.
Environmental activists have voiced concerns over the $5.1 billion luxury hotel project, initially proposed in 2024. Protests have intensified, leading to temporary work suspensions. However, Prime Minister Edi Rama defends the project, calling it "Europe's finest project" and crucial for Albania's economic development. Scientists visiting the site confirmed damage to turtle nesting areas, bird habitats, and dunes. The European Union has also expressed concerns about Albania's environmental obligations. Professor Friedrich Schiemer emphasized the urgency of limiting further damage to preserve the area's natural integrity.
