Summary
- A unique silver-hued bear cub is gaining attention on Katmai's live cameras.
- Genetics are responsible for the cub's unusual silver coloring.
- The cub is estimated to be six months old and is thriving.

Katmai National Park in Alaska is currently showcasing a distinctive silver-hued bear cub on its popular wildlife livestream. This unique brown bear cub, estimated to be six months old, has captivated viewers and park staff alike. Its unusual coloring is a result of genetics, according to park rangers, dispelling theories of it being a hybrid.
The cub was first spotted in late June along the Brooks River with its mother, identified as bear 677. While bear 677 lacks a nickname, viewers had previously referred to her as 'Bear X' or 'Xena'. This cub's distinctive appearance is not considered a vulnerability, as the species does not depend on fur color for camouflage.
The Katmai livestreams, particularly those at Brooks Falls, document the brown bears' efforts to accumulate fat for the winter months. These bears consume large quantities of salmon daily, with males significantly increasing their weight from summer to fall. This season has also highlighted nature's harsh realities, with documented instances of cubs being preyed upon by other bears, indicating a survival rate for spring cubs between 33% and 50%.
