Airlines Embrace Sustainable Amenity Kits to Reduce Waste
17 Aug
Summary
- Singapore Airlines focuses on reusable amenity kits
- Airlines aim to balance sustainability and passenger needs
- Efforts to reduce carbon footprint and waste across the industry

In the current year of 2025, the airline industry is making significant progress in adopting more sustainable practices, with a particular focus on reducing waste from onboard services. Singapore Airlines, in particular, has been at the forefront of this initiative, implementing a range of sustainability measures, including the use of reusable amenity kits.
The airline's Vice President of Lounge Development and Inflight Operations, Timothy Chua, explains that sustainability is a top priority for the company, but they also strive to meet passenger expectations and needs. To this end, Singapore Airlines has worked closely with its suppliers to ensure that the materials used in their amenity kits, such as lotion bottles and other components, are as recyclable and sustainable as possible.
Moreover, the airline is designing the amenity kits to be versatile and appealing, encouraging passengers to reuse them for other purposes, such as a travel pack for passports and tickets. While the airline does not have specific data on the reuse rate of these kits, Chua says they are satisfied with the anecdotal evidence that passengers are indeed repurposing them.

Across the industry, airlines are taking various steps to reduce their environmental impact, including optimizing fuel-efficient routes, electrifying ground vehicles, and introducing more eco-friendly meal service items. The aviation sector as a whole has set a goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050, although progress in areas like sustainable aviation fuel development has been slow.
