AI Radar Spots Polar Bears, Prevents Close Encounters
15 Jul
Summary
- AI-assisted radar system "Bear-dar" detected approaching polar bears.
- The system provided an early warning, allowing staff to manage the encounter.
- Less sea ice increases encounters, making this technology vital.

An advanced AI-assisted radar system, known as "Bear-dar," has successfully detected a mother polar bear and her two cubs approaching a remote weather station in Eureka, Nunavut. This detection provided essential early warning, enabling station staff to monitor the animals and safely guide them back towards the sea ice without a dangerous close encounter. Developed by Polar Bears International and Spotter Global, Bear-dar utilizes radar to track movement and AI to analyze potential wildlife targets, even in challenging Arctic conditions.
The technology is designed to mitigate increasing human-polar bear conflicts, which are expected to rise as melting sea ice forces bears to spend more time on shore. The system's ability to detect movement over 1,500 meters away, through darkness and adverse weather, offers a critical safety layer for human settlements in polar bear habitats. While currently refining its ability to distinguish between different Arctic species, Bear-dar's successful first confirmed polar bear detection at Eureka demonstrates its potential for future safety applications, possibly including automated deterrents.
