AI Drones Defeat Wildfires in 10 Minutes
23 Sep
Summary
- Dryad's drones autonomously detected and suppressed wildfires.
- The system detected fires within minutes, often in the smoldering phase.
- Autonomous drones launched and suppressed fires, ignoring decoys.
A groundbreaking autonomous wildfire response system developed by Dryad Networks has emerged victorious in the XPRIZE Wildfire competition. The Silvanet sensor network and Silvaguard drones achieved the competition's demanding goal of detecting and suppressing high-risk wildfires within 10 minutes across a vast area.
During the final tests in June 2026, Dryad's technology successfully detected and verified target fires in under 12 minutes, autonomously launching a response while ignoring simulated decoy fires. This performance validated the system's end-to-end autonomy.
Carsten Brinkschulte, CEO of Dryad Networks, emphasized the critical role of ultra-early detection. He stated that their Silvanet system detects fires in their smoldering phase, enabling Silvaguard drones to suppress them before they escalate beyond manageable limits.
The Silvanet network employs AI-enabled, solar-powered gas sensors that act as an "electronic nose," capable of detecting wildfire signatures within minutes. Recent deliveries include 10,000 sensors to France and over 7,000 to Italy.
When a sensor triggers an alert, an autonomous Silvaguard Observation Drone verifies the fire's location using infrared and optical cameras. Subsequently, a Suppression Drone deploys up to 100 liters of suppressant. Both drones operate entirely autonomously.
Dryad plans to invest in productizing Silvaguard, with operational pilots scheduled for 2027 and commercial availability anticipated for 2028. The company's core mission aligns with preventing fires from growing out of control.
XPRIZE will now focus on an Impact Phase to help translate such promising technologies into deployable wildfire management solutions.
