AI Spots Fires Faster Than Humans

Wildfires have devastated landscapes and displaced hundreds of thousands across France, Spain, and Portugal. In France alone, four lives were lost fighting these fires, with 150 others injured. While firefighting techniques remain largely unchanged, technology is transforming fire detection.

Artificial intelligence-powered cameras are now monitoring forests, replacing traditional watchtowers. These systems can distinguish smoke from other disturbances with near-certainty and detect fires up to 20km away. Alerts are sent instantly to firefighters' phones, accompanied by real-time video, zoom capabilities, and predictive spread maps based on weather and humidity.

Companies like Midgard and FireTracking are at the forefront, with FireTracking's systems surveying a million hectares primarily in France. The cost for implementing such technology, like 11 detection sites in Indre-et-Loire covering 6,000 sq km, was €1.2 million. This technology is also being tested for agricultural land fires.

Future developments include solar-powered drones for patrols and ground sensors measuring gases before flames appear. While drones are being tested for sea rescue, their direct firefighting application is still in development. Firefighters emphasize that technology aids detection but does not extinguish fires; human intervention remains crucial.

Despite advancements, the critical role of ground personnel in pulling hoses and directly combating flames is irreplaceable. While new technologies like heavy-lifting drones and fire-retardant spraying planes are emerging, they serve as support rather than replacements. Researchers are also developing drones for fire assessment, providing vital risk information to ground crews.
