AI Boom Fuels Data Centers Near Endangered Species

New analysis reveals a concerning trend in the United States: states with rapidly expanding data center development are also home to numerous endangered species. This coincides with growing nationwide environmental concerns surrounding the artificial intelligence boom. The report highlights the infrastructure's ground-level impact, noting that this growth often occurs in areas already facing drought or sensitive habitats.

Opposition to large-scale data center projects is intensifying across the US. Concerns include immense electricity demand, significant water consumption, land use, and broader environmental impacts. In response, New York recently became the first state to impose a one-year moratorium on permits for new hyperscale data centers, allowing regulators to develop new environmental and energy standards.

Outforia's analysis ranked states based on data center projects, endangered species, forest cover, and drought risk. Virginia topped the list with an environmental pressure index of 100, largely due to its status as a major data center hub where growth significantly overlaps with existing environmental pressures. Georgia, North Carolina, and Texas followed, with Texas showing 202 data center projects and 120 endangered species.

The construction and operation of these massive facilities contribute to habitat fragmentation, forest loss, and increased pressure on ecosystems supporting endangered species. Water usage, particularly for cooling systems, is a major point of contention, with fears of increased competition for water resources in drought-prone regions. The goal, experts emphasize, is not to hinder technological advancement but to ensure infrastructure is planned carefully with local environmental conditions in mind.
