AI to Sharpen Delhi's Pollution Forecasts
26 Jun
Summary
- New AI system to provide sharper, real-time pollution forecasts.
- IIT-Kanpur's AI will predict worsening air quality days in advance.
- System aims for year-round, hyperlocal air quality prediction.

IIT-Kanpur's Airawat Research Foundation is pioneering an advanced AI-driven system to enhance air quality forecasting for Delhi. This new Decision Support System (DSS) moves beyond current models by continuously learning from live pollution data and historical AQI patterns.
The AI-based DSS is designed to identify the onset of pollution episodes earlier, allowing authorities crucial time to implement measures. Unlike the current single daily forecast, this system learns and refines its predictions over time, offering a more dynamic and accurate outlook.
The initiative aims to address shortcomings in existing systems, such as an outdated emissions database and uneven forecast accuracy, particularly outside peak winter months. The new platform will provide more granular insights, pinpointing pollution hotspots and regional influences.
This collaboration, formalized through a five-year MoU with the Delhi Environment department, seeks to generate pollution forecasts 48 to 72 hours in advance. The improved predictions are intended to directly inform Delhi's staged pollution control measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) and National Clean Air Programme (NCAP).
