Agra Chokes: Air Quality Worsens Ahead of Diwali
6 Nov
Summary
- Agra's AQI reached 190, nearing the 'poor' category before Diwali.
- Hospitals reported an increase in patients with breathing and allergy issues.
- Road washing and dust control measures are underway by the Municipal Corporation.
As Diwali approaches, Agra is experiencing a significant rise in air pollution, with the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching 190. This level is close to the 'poor' classification, a stark contrast to the safe benchmark of below 50. Hospitals in the city have reported a noticeable increase in patients presenting with respiratory ailments and allergic reactions over the last fortnight. Common complaints include chest heaviness, dry coughs, and breathlessness, with a rise in asthma attacks also observed.
Residents attribute the worsening air quality to a combination of vehicle emissions, dust from unpaved roads, ongoing construction, and the illegal burning of waste. The situation is anticipated to become more critical as firecracker usage intensifies during Diwali festivities. In response, the Agra Municipal Corporation has commenced early morning road washing in major markets and public areas to mitigate dust pollution and is monitoring the situation closely using Smart City cameras.
