- The dog showed symptoms including vomiting and collapse.
- The owner warns other dog owners about adder risks.

A woman from Rhosneigr, Anglesey, has issued a stark warning to dog owners after her spaniel, Baxter, died following a suspected adder bite. The incident occurred on March 31st when Baxter, who was being fostered and had been with his owner for two years, suddenly became ill after running into long grass near Afon Crigyll.
Within minutes, Baxter exhibited severe symptoms including vomiting and collapse. He was rushed to a veterinarian but, despite intensive treatment, succumbed to his condition six hours later. The owner suspects an adder bite was the cause due to Baxter's labored breathing and other signs, although a definitive confirmation was not made by the vet.
The owner highlighted the specific risks adders pose to dogs during warmer periods. The Amphibian and Reptile Conservation notes that adders, the UK's only venomous native snake, are protected by law and commonly inhabit areas like sand dunes and moorland.
Veterinary charity PDSA emphasizes that snake bites are emergencies for dogs. They advise owners to avoid known adder habitats during summer months, particularly from June to August, and to keep dogs on leads when in such areas.
