Lancashire's congested A582 gets major smart junction upgrade
26 Jan
Summary
- Smart junctions will replace roundabouts on the busy A582.
- The £77m revamp aims to improve journey times and reduce congestion.
- New signal-controlled junctions and traffic lights will manage flow.

A long-planned £77 million revamp of a busy central Lancashire route, the A582, has advanced significantly. Planning permission has been granted for crucial smart junction improvements in South Ribble, a key element of the scheme to tackle notorious congestion. This project, 13 years in the making, will replace outdated double roundabouts with modern, signal-controlled junctions. These signalised intersections aim to optimise traffic flow and reduce journey times for commuters and freight. The wider revamp between Lostock Hall and Penwortham focuses on junction upgrades and advanced traffic light technology. The council also anticipates the scheme will discourage rat-running and encourage more cycling and walking. Additionally, it includes measures for a 10% net gain in biodiversity and enhanced safety features like toucan crossings. Buses and heavy goods vehicles will receive priority at the new traffic signals. This iteration represents a scaled-back but focused approach compared to earlier, more ambitious dualling proposals.
